However, I'm not really set on this decision and open for other suggestions. So effectively granting him a heavy crossbow without the heavy property and lower range. What I decided for now is that I will offer him to improve the damage die to 1d10. I think it would be really lame to tell him: "Yeah! You can improve the crossbow, but do not benefit from it at all." It could be relatively powerful for a ranged martial build (something we do not have in the group anyways). Now it would be easy to simply remove the loading property, but this would not benefit the wizard at all. His suggestion was to reduce the loading time of the crossbow. I want to grant him an improvement that his wizard can actually use, but it should not be significantly more powerful in the hands of a martial character. Now I wonder however, in which way it would be balanced to improve the crossbow. So it makes sense for me that he should be able to improve the crossbow. Also, he studied at an academy that focuses on production and Analysis of Magical items.
The character has a Guild Artisan background and used to operate a fine mechanics workshop for more than 100 years before he became a wizard. He also informed me that he wants to apply magic to the crossbow at a later point in the game (which I feel will be actually easier for us to implement).
