The only exception in the last chart was the Archetype Nolly test (the icon with glasses), where the performance difference in Ableton between M1 Max and M2 Pro is similar to that in REAPER.

It makes sense because remember, Logic and Ableton can't utilize efficiency cores, so with M1 Max having two less efficiency cores (or two more performance cores), it performed as a 8-core chip for Logic and Ableton while M2 Pro performed like a 6-core chip. Now, take a look at the percentage differences between M1 Max and M2 Pro doing the same test in Logic and Ableton: I'm guessing the differences just come from the efficiency cores not being as fast as the performance cores, so the M2 Pro naturally didn't perform as well as the M1 Max. My thinking was that since both M1 Max and M2 Pro have 10 cores, tests done in REAPER should have only a small difference, as REAPER can use all the cores, while tests done in Logic and Ableton should show a much bigger difference because the M2 Pro has two more efficiency cores that won't be utilized by these two DAWs (therefore it also has two less performance cores).Īnd I was right! To further verify the difference in core usage for these three DAWs, I did the same amp sim tests on the M1 Max chip, which has the same amount of cores as the M2 Pro chip I tested. If we look at the M2 Pro chip test data, REAPER could handle 88 more tracks than Logic and 123 more tracks than Ableton Live, which are differences of respectively 25% and 37%.
I tested three different amp sims in total-Overloud TH-U, Neural DSP Archetype Nolly (via Rosetta 2) and STL Tones AmpHub-and every time, the story was the same. You can see that REAPER was able to handle many more tracks on the the same chip than the other two DAWs. (In case you are not familiar, amp sims are very commonly used in rock & metal music production and they are quite CPU heavy.) Looking at the CPU meters (see the links below), it's clear that REAPER made FULL use of all the cores on the chip, both efficiency ones and performance ones, while Logic and Ableton did not utilize the efficiency cores: Without fail, REAPER was always able to get more juice out of every chip than Logic and Ableton could. I was running some tests on the M1 Max, M2 and M2 Pro chips using Logic Pro X, REAPER and Ableton Live to see how those three chips compared and which of those three DAWs was more optimized for the chips. If any of you IT folks can offer some insights into this, that would be amazing! As a result, REAPER was able to offer more performance for music production tasks on the same chip. TLDR: Empirical evidence shows that Logic Pro X and Ableton Live don't fully utilize the efficiency cores on the three tested M-series chips (M1 Max, M2, M2 Pro) while REAPER does.
